St. Joseph's Catholic College

College Life

St. Joseph’s offers a wide variety of activities and experiences to supplement and support the academic requirements of A level study.  Learning at Key Stage 5 is hugely demanding as students balance making progress in each of their subjects alongside preparing to move on into adulthood and their chosen future careers.

Over the last year our Sixth Form students have been to India to help with a school building project, had a scavenger hunt finishing with a BBQ at Coate Water, Yr 13 Prom and went on various trips to the theatre and art galleries.

As part of our preparation for Higher Education students begin by attending the UCAS National Exhibition at Bristol UWE.  Many of our students have been successful in their application to HE preparation programmes (during Year 12) including Access to Bristol, On track to Bath, Reading Scholars and Brookes Engage.  Students who participate in these highly competitive, nationally-offered experiences are usually allocated preferable conditional offers for university entry the following year.  Potential Oxbridge candidates attend the National Oxbridge Conference and participate in pre-interview activities through Intel, in Swindon.

Many students choose to participate in work experience activities during their time in the Sixth Form.  This experience is invaluable if they are considering an HE application for teaching or nursing, or considering an application to an apprenticeship programme or full-time employment.  Watch out for our twitter updates and newsletter articles with specific information regarding student work experience placements!

Students are encouraged to participate in a combination of College-organised pursuits such as the Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and Chaplaincy charity events such as the 'sleep out' for the homeless, this December. Our current Year 13 students have designed a cafe for sixth formers and staff on the mezzanine area of the College chapel and this Christmas, the Sixth Form will run their Christmas Shoebox appeal for those vulnerable members of the Swindon community. There are sporting events, with a basketball club and a badminton league which includes 24 teams!  This is coupled with a comprehensive tutorial system including a diverse range of experiences from planning and cooking on a student budget to safe driving awareness run by Wiltshire Police.

These are just a small selection of the experiences that go to making up 'College life' for our post -16 students, helping to build confidence, knowledge and adding to CVs and university application forms.
