Business Studies is a popular option choice for students at St Joseph’s.The key subject aims are to:

  • Actively engage students in the study of business and support their development as effective independent learners, and reflective thinkers with enquiring minds
  • Allow students to develop and apply their business knowledge, understanding and skills to contemporary issues in a range of local, national and global contexts
  • Enable students to appreciate the range of perspectives of different business stakeholders
  • Enable students to consider the extent to which business activity can be ethical and sustainable.

Course: Edexcel GCSE Business Studies 

Students will begin by investigating the process of how businesses are set up, and the theory behind what makes a business successful. This is followed by looking at the many decisions that a business needs to make once it is up and running, plus an introduction to business finance and the analysis of business performance.

Programme of Study:

Unit 1 – Investigating small business – written exam 50% of the GCSE

Topics studied in this unit:

  1. Enterprise and entrepreneurship
  2. Spotting a business opportunity
  3. Putting a business idea into practice
  4. Making the business effective
  5. Understanding external influences on business

Unit 2 – Building a business – written examination 50% of the GCSE

Topics studied in this unit:

  1. Growing the business
  2. Making marketing decisions
  3. Making operational decisions
  4. Making financial decisions
  5. Making human resource decisions

Assessment Summary:

At the end of the two years of study students will sit two examination papers, a paper for each unit area. The examiniation papers include multiple choice and short answer questions as well as a small case study with questions based on the business discussed.

During their two years of study students will have the opportunity to practice various types of assessment in preparation for their external examinations in Year 11.

The GCSE Business course is excellent preparation for A Levels in Business Studies and Economics. In addition, a wide variety of higher level apprenticeships will also be a possible next step for this course.


Other Courses

The Edexcel Applied Business Studies  course will come to an end in July 2018. This course is studied by Year 11 students.
